I find I need to spend time in a place to really understand things more meaningfully. I try to invest the time and develop the relationships and learn more about the people and the situation. And the more I learn, the more I come to realize that things aren't as sensationalistic as the headlines that often end up polarizing people. It's not enough to go and visit a place for two weeks or a month and do a story. That's not enough time to begin to really understand the culture and how history affects the lives of the people. I don't feel comfortable working in places I don't know well. I think the better work comes when people know you and trust you, and also when you have a comfort level in a place.
I added digital when I moved to India. It's a very different way of shooting because you can see right away if you've got the picture, and I appreciate that when I have to shoot in low light or indoors. But there are times when I like shooting film because not knowing that you've got the shot makes you work harder and longer and you may get more variations.
